Ten things necessary for an effective LMS

(In no particular order)

1. It should be able to integrate organizational requirements with personal learning needs (4 factors that motive learning).

2. If using an ASP, the company must be financially viable with a compatible philosophy - usually indicates a strong partnership will be possible.

3. Offer a full range of administrative features, for example:
Manage registration, electronic commerce requirements, online rosters, and attendance records. It should also be able to track student data and provide online communication tools.

4. Offer a full range of instructional features, for example:
Provide user friendly access to instructors by allowing them to integrate course materials into the new environment and allow for the use of a variety of media files. It should also support synchronous, and asynchronous online threaded conferencing and allow instructors to share instructional materials among several courses.

5. If not using an ASP, the LMS must be compatible with the host OS platform and client software. It must also be easy to deploy to the current system and easy to administer.

6. The prospective client must know what his/her needs are (size, scope, flexibility etc). The LMS will be effective if they have the right tool for the right job.

7. If creating a LMS from the ground up using some type of course authoring tool, an effective LMS would require a team of professionals to help create the course.

8. The LMS should be cost effective and the company using the LMS should be evaluating the system for satisfaction, KSA and improved performance and productivity.

9. Compatibility with existing or older systems. Important so data bases can transfer and coordinate with new LMS.

10. Provide the learner with opportunities to engage in synchronous and asynchronous communication with instructors.
