Description of Content

Day 1: Students will receive general information about life and study in the U.S., and UCSD in particular. Topics include:
• UCSD as part of the UC system
• Difference between UCSD and UCSD Extension
• International Student Services: office hours, medical insurance, housing
• Maps, police, hospitals, classrooms, parking
• Study of business, course descriptions, class schedule
• Internship
Assignment #1 will be submitted at this time. You will share one resource that you have discovered with cohort, and offer explanation, via forum post.

Day 2: Students will learn specific information about:
• Immigration law as it pertains to them
• F-1 visa status
• Laws pertaining to work in the U.S.
• Driving laws
• Drinking age laws
• Housing contracts, etc.
Assignment #2 will be due: multiple-choice assessment demonstrating understanding of above information

Day 3: Students will review link and information regarding academic integrity:
• Plagiarism defined
• APA guidelines
• Use of technological devices in classroom
• Shared ideas vs. own ideas, concept of paraphrasing
• Attendance and behavior protocol
Assignment #3 will be due: paraphrased paragraph, demonstrating understanding of above concepts, and commitment to abide by them, submitted through discussion board

Day 4: Students will create 2 accounts:
LinkedIn account:
• Build profile of work and education history
• Update “LinkedIn” account with professional information
• Invite others to join
Facebook account:
• Build profile of personal life (family, friends, hobbies, travel, etc)
• Update with photos, music, video, and any information appropriate for sharing
• Identify one student from a country other than your own and make contact
Assignment #4 will be due: students will post to Forum Board in Moodle a brief introduction of your contact, based on what you learned via two Social Media sites

Day 5: Students will prepare to present face-to-face information about your countries:
• What is it, where is it
• What language(s) are spoken
• Industries, population, metrics and statistics
• Brief history
Assignment 5 will be due at face-to-face orientation upon arrival in the U.S.
