Course Goals and Objectives:

Students come from all over the world to study business and earn a Professional Certificate through UCSD Extension, in a 9 month course specially designed for their needs. Each cohort, of which a new one begins every quarter, is made up of an average of 30 students. While their common goal is to earn a Professional Certificate in Business Management, their motivational levels and ability to acculturate can be quite different from one student to the next. This phase of orientation, (Phase I, delivered and completed prior to the students’ arrival in the U.S.), is meant to help them assimilate into life in San Diego and achieve success, not only in their studies, but in their ability to adapt to different rules, guidelines and general expectations.

Upon completing Phase I, students will be able to:
• Identify resources that will provide them with useful information throughout their study abroad, and share resources as a class.
• Demonstrate a thorough understanding of laws and policies that will apply in the U.S. via an on-line assessment
• Paraphrase the expectations of study, and the principles of academic integrity in the U.S., through a written assessment submitted on-line via a discussion board.
• Connect with a future classmate from another country, and be prepared to introduce them and their culture to the rest of the class at Phase II face-to-face orientation
•Introduce their personal and professional life through profiles created in Facebook and LinkedIn, such that students can begin to get to know each other, and work toward landing a successful internship

Students may be able to:
•Demonstrate knowledge of Skype or other A/V technology to connect with fellow students
