Description of Content:
This program will familiarize students with the beginning phases of advanced photo editing. It will seek to inspire them to pursue advanced photo editing further and provide them an opportunity to create an imaginative and fun joke photo. A secondary goal is to make students more web-wise by familiarizing them with the topic of internet hoaxes.

Section 1: Generating Interest and Excitement:
The first section will focus on piquing student interest and creativity, as well as introducing them to the basic project concepts of layers, image types, transparency.

*Moodle introduction: Students are made familiar with the Moodle and the teacher explains to students how it will be used in the class.
*Teacher posts examples to real internet jokes and hoaxes and posts them to a Moodle forum. Students comment on each of the teacher postings, explaining whether or not they think the image and hoax is believable, and why or why not. This provides material for class discussions on the topic of photo jokes and hoaxes.
* Concept Illustration: Teacher shows students a project file with multiple pictures separated onto different layers with their backgrounds removed. Teacher demonstrates how layers can be turned on and off, oriented differently, resized, and moved.
* Choosing Source Images: Students search through a wide variety of multimedia images to find backgrounds and images they want to use in their project.
* Students write their first blog post on possible ideas for their multi-layer image.
* Picture Taking: While students are browsing pictures, students pose for a picture in front of a plain white background.

Section 2: Learning the Image Tools:
The second section is focused on helping students understand how to use the necessary photo editing tools in Paint.net. Tutorials or quick reference sheets are posted in the Moodle.

*Importing: Teacher demonstrates how to import images into Paint.net as separate layers.
o Students repeat the process on their own projects.
*Removing backgrounds 1:Teacher demonstrates how to subtract the background from the picture of themselves using the "magic wand tool" and the "eraser tool".
o Students repeat the process with teacher and peer tutoring.
*Removing backgrounds 2:Teacher demonstrates how to subtract background on more complex images using "magic wand", "eraser tool", and "select tool".
o Students repeat the process with teacher and peer tutoring.
*Moving, Resizing, and Rotating: Teacher demonstrates how to use the "select tool" and the "move pixels tool" to move, resize, and rotate images on the various layers.
o Students repeat on layers they have already worked on with teacher and peer tutoring.

Section 3: Work-time:In this section, students will begin working independently on the procedures that they learned in section 2. They will still have access to teacher and peer tutoring.

Section 4: Finishing and Feedback
*Once students have finished their deleting backgrounds and arranging their layers, the teacher explains the different ways to save a project file. Teacher Discusses .JPG, .GIF, and .PNG.
*Show students how to save a Paint.net project (.PDN) as a .JPG file by flattening the layers and adjusting the quality.
*Students will post their project up on the Moodle for viewing and discussion by the class.
*Students will print each project in for a bulletin board display.
