Rodriguez - Moodle Sessions on Foundations Unit

SESSION 1 - Unwrapping the Textbook
In this sessions, students will learn how the textbook is organized by previewing the chapter using a guide. They will then proceed to read the chapter and organize notes.

1. Students will read an introductory section that explains the method for tackling the AP textbook, Traditions and Encounters 3rd Edition.

2. Students will download a preview guide to review pages 4-12 of the textbook. To make this interactive, students will have to respond to questions based on the activity in a discussion forum.

3. Deliverable - Students will create three graphic organizers - one for each section of the chapter covered. These will be used to check if students understood how to use the textbook cues to set up notes.

4. Once graphic organizers are approved, students will use these to take notes on the chapter.

SESSION 2 - Comparing and Contrasting using the Thesis
In this session, students will learn how to write a thesis for a comparison essay.

1. Students will watch a short video on how to write a comparison thesis.

2. Students will download a checklist of items that should be included in a thesis statement.

3. Next, students will read strong and weak sample thesis statements from previous comparison essays.

4. Deliverable - Students will review their notes from previous session and use the information to write a thesis statement for a writing prompt. This will be posted to a forum where students will be expected to comment on each other's thesis statements.
