Recognizing Literary Devices Using Poetry: An introductory class for 5th grade students
Goals
Literary devices are ways to make our writing clearer and more descriptive. These are devices authors use to make poetry better. During this course, you will gain a better understanding how to analyze and comprehend literature through the use of literary devices. You will learn how to identify, recognize, and define six key literary terms, including alliteration metaphor, onomatopoeia, personification, rhyme, and simile. We will examine poems which use these devices and discuss their effectiveness. As a final project you will analyze a poem’s use of these devices.
Objectives
After completing this course, you will be able to:
• Identify and describe literary devices including alliteration metaphor, onomatopoeia, personification, rhyme, and simile
• Evaluate an authors use of these literary devices.
• Explain impact literary devices have on a poems overall meaning, imagery, and the feelings it portrays.
• Discuss an authors use of literary devices.
