Forum Discussions
The discussion form will be use in each lesson. Students will communicate with each other and their instructor, students will be encouraged to respond to posts and the instructor will provide feedback. Students are asked to post to three different forum discussions:
Lesson 1: Find a poem that uses one or more of the literary devices you’ve learned today. You may use the internet or a poetry book, be sure to provide the link to your poem or a copy of it along with its title and author. Identify the device(s) used and where they are found in the poem.
Lesson 2: Identify the poem and its author you evaluated. Then answer the following in complete sentences, be sure to provide support for your answers: Give a brief summary of the poem, what is it about? Which literary device(s) did the author use? How did the device(s) affect the poem? Did it change or affect the meaning or the feeling of the poem? Why do you think the author choose to use the device(s) he or she used? What is the overall message/theme of the poem?
Lesson 3: To help you prepare to write your essay complete to following brainstorm. Title and author of your poem: Literary devices used (give specific examples): Device(s) affect the poem-did it change the meaning or the feeling of the poem? What is the overall message/theme of the poem?
Discussion Session
A discussion session will take place during week two. The discussion will be student lead, with groups presenting their findings. The instructor will encourage discussion among all participants and encourage students to connect their findings with those of their peers.
Additional Written Communication
The culminating activity for this course will be completion of a short (2-3 paragraphs) essay. Students will submit their essay to the instructor via file upload. The essay submission window will be open for a specified amount of time requiring students to manage their time and turn the assignment in on time.
Prompt: In a 2-3 paragraph essay, analyze your poem paying specific attention to the literary devices used by the author. Be sure to include the poem’s title and author as well as a brief summary of the poem. You need to include a discussion on how the literary devices are used and their impact on the poem’s overall feeling and meaning. Support your answers.
