Creating a moodle course was an experience I will never forget. Having such a short time to build a course from the ground up was a challenge. I was unsure of how successful I would be given the time restrictions; however I found moodle to be fairly intuitive and helpful. Most features and tools I could figure out intuitively with some trial and error and for those that I struggled with Moodle included ample help resources. I like the idea that all my course resources are in one spot, items students need for the course or for a particular lesson can be found easily and are well organized.
I shared my course with my fiancée and a sixth grade student; neither of whom had used moodle before but both are familiar with the concepts taught during the sessions. As a part of his job my fiancée completes internet trainings frequently. He has also a part of a team who decides content for various trainings. He liked the organization of the information; materials for particular sessions were grouped with that session. The course appeared to be user friendly especially for adults, although he did not know if it would be something fifth graders could navigate. He was unsure of their technological abilities. He did suggest that the PDF’s on the site open in new windows, something I overlooked during the creation of the site.
The sixth grade student I shared it with was enthusiastic about the prospect of taking a course via the internet. She is a bright student who has average technological skills. She was able to navigate the site with ease, and enjoyed review the content of the site. She thought it would be something fifth graders would enjoy and be able to use with ease. She suggested I add a game to the site.
While creating this course clear and achievable objectives were determined. Learners are introduced to them early in the course and they are continually emphasized in each lesson. Activates and deliverables the learners need to complete during the course are specified. Also learner to learner communication is encouraged with the use of group activities and forum posts. The course was designed to be driven by the learner, and allows the learner to receive ample feedback, on forum posts, quizzes and milestones like the wiki brainstorm. Discussions are designed to incorporate real time chat, and conversations between the learner and teacher as well as learner to learner.
I created the course in its entirety including:
Syllabus
Research of course materials
Finding appropriate poems and videos of those poems
Creation of all worksheets and course materials
Creation of all assignments and forum posts
Research of additional information
