Moodle Project Final Paper

Our course, World History, was based on two lessons of history and one lesson of Podcasting in order for students to complete the final Podcasting project. The first course was on Rise of Totalitarianism: Soviet Union and the second was on World War II- European Theater. There are many images of propaganda distributed during the time for students to view and reflect on. We also uploaded maps for students to observe the Axis of Aggression in WWII. There are many different administrative functions available in Moodle. Neither my partner, Dylan, not myself had any experience with Moodle at the beginning of our course. We kept our site simple despite the many administrative options available on Moodle. Some of the options noted are the “look” of the site, assigning different roles, and managing grades.

Moodle has many options for administer to change the course as it is being created. Some of the most interesting features include: the ability to “hide” modules the instructor does not want to reveal to the learners, closing dates for tests and quizzes, and the option to upload various resources other than text. We used the option to upload images and documents quite frequently. Images were used to teach about the power of propaganda historically. We also uploaded many documents in which students would download in order to fill out.

Editing functionality in Moodle is possible, but quite complicated to master within the short time given for the project. It is possible to edit font and/or use HTML or Rich Text. There are also many possibilities to change/edit all of the various aspects noted above.

Based on the High Quality Online Course Rubric:

The success of the course:
The course was a success in many aspects. The students were able to access the files independently of the teacher (via online). This course has the potential of moving from an in class lecture to a completely online course.

The aspects of your course you would change and why:
The maps and some of the images uploaded are too large to view on the computer screen without scrolling up and down/side to side. If I were to change anything, it would be the size of how those images are displayed.

The aspects of your course you would keep the same and why:
The students were really interested in the images provided for the propaganda of Stalin, so I would keep those images… and I would add more examples!

What aspects of the model for designing VDILS did you use within your course?
I think that some aspects of VDILS are quite prominent in our course. I think our course is dynamic in its various sources of media to teach a lesson. The learners are required to be autonomous and work independently after instruction. Overall, I am proud of our product.
