The following deliverables are part of the course “The California Missions.”
Lesson 1: File Upload & Forum Post
Students will be required to submit a paragraph describing one of the California Missions. Prior to this assignment, students will have been required to participate in a virtual tour, or read about one of the missions in order to gain an understanding of what missions look like. This assignment will be a homework and in-class assignment, created in a word processing program, such as MS Word. Students will then upload the file for grading and feedback. After reading about a few of the missions, students will create a forum post telling which mission they would like to study.
Lesson 2: Discussion Forum Post
During Lesson 2, students will learn about the founding of the missions by participating in a project-based learning activity. Afterward, students will post a journal entry from the point of view of a padre, an Indian, or a soldier during the mission time period. Students will also be required to respond to questions posed to them by other students, and answer them from the same perspective as their original journal entry. This supports the objective of describing and understanding the daily lives of people who occupied the missions and presidios. This assignment will be done both in class and as homework.
Lesson 3: File Upload (Powerpoint)
After writing a research paper, students will create a Powerpoint presentation that highlights the mission they have studied. Students will upload the file to Moodle for grading and feedback. This assignment will be completed both in class and as homework, and presented in class. This supports the objectives in that the student must show understanding of the Spanish colonization of California and the influence of the missions on the people occupying California.
