One of the parts of this article that caught my attention the most was the concept of students collaborating with students not just in their enrolling university but across universities. I think that this would be an important component if I were creating an EMS of the future. With distance learning, there really is not a need for an institution, it would be much more practical for students to be grouped based on what they are learning. The EMS I created would be centered around the content. In other words all medical students would participate in the same EMS and all law students would be in another EMS. This would go along with the idea of national standards as well. A student would not receive a better eduation because they were to university X because they would be sharing information with people nationwide. This would be useful to students, since they would at all times have access to multiple viewpoints.
I think one of the big problems we have in truly utilizing LMS and EMS is that we can't step outside of the box - the box being the walls of the university. Sure we are distance learners, but most of us would still say we attend SDSU. Some of us may even look down on distance learners that are studying through a different institution. I think that the EMS should eventually be the institution rather than a school. This would eliminate overcrowding, parking problems, utility costs, and a whole number of things that cause post-secondary education to be too expensive for students.
