If I were to design an LMS of the future it would include the following:

Social Interact-ability(my word):
Throughout my experience with e-learning I have been frustrated with the inability to have that true “classroom experience”. Often hours would go by without the instructor interacting with the learner for more than a one word phrase. In order to have true education/learning there must be less one-way and more interactive involvement. There must be a more multi-sensory interaction ability within the LMS to achieve social interact-ability.

Individualized Learner Dashboard:
While investigating LMS’s for my client project I was most impressed by those in which learners were given a “dashboard” similar to a car’s dashboard that allows that learner to quickly find what they are looking for and also feel more in control to their learning by the individualized approach.

Individualized Learning Process
Each learner has different approaches, needs, and abilities. The LMS of the future would be able to assess the learner throughout each activity, leading the learner to re-teaching or to pre-teaching if necessary. Also, the LMS would be able to allow for skipping of requirements if necessary. A sort of constant assessing of the learner would ensure ever learner’s success if paired with appropriate interventions.

Self-generated Reporting
The LMS of the future would assess learners throughout and send alerts and reports to aid administrators/instructors in providing personalized assistance to help learners gain the necessary resources to be successful. Also, the reports would help administrators to manage the enrollment, courses, etc., through alerts of needs such as opening new course due to enrollment needs, corrections of errors on tests, and other items that can be of importance.

e-Commerce and Beyond
Whether for-profit or non-profit, the ability to attain all of the curriculum and necessary texts in one place is a plus for any LMS and its user. Also, as learners are going through their learning experience they may want to have more resources or may find the need for more resources and an onsite store would not only provide ease for the learner it would make money for the LMS administration.
