This idea, when it gets off, running and welcomed by the general public can accomplish so much. The article considered many needs and ramifications of such a learning structure and the whole idea excites me. As a product of an LMS learning environment for the last two years of my educational career, I have nothing but positive things to say about how its structure has changed me as a learner and a professional. First of all, when a learner is in this situation, he or she must completely be engaged in the content. So many times, students enroll in a university not sure of what will come of it and cannot commit to a field of study. It seems that many people graduate with a degree that has many possibilities, but little focus. In order to find success, an LMS forces a learner to give the field of study a very hard look before commiting. When a learner accomplishes such a task, that is one step closer to success.
Secondly, he or she has no choice but to become one that is in complete control time management. The products of learners will still be held to the same standard and it will be up to the learner, first and foremost to complete these readings, tasks and projects. Yes, a cohort can provide some moral support, however, as we all know, it is ultimately up to the student.
Finally, something that really struck me as interesting was the financial aspect of bringing an LMS to the educational forefront. I believe there will have to be competition for funding. I believe an LMS setting can help lower the costs of higher education, but providing the best courses with the most engaging content and instruction will be highly scrutinized. The federal or state government's confidence in and pledge to commit funds to the best program of an LMS institution can trickle down to the public's point of view.
Online learning is not for everyone. It takes a very disciplined person to undertake such tasks from the comfort of his or her own private surroundings. Perhaps no one can scrutinize more that the learner herself.
