Course Title: The American Civil War, 1861-1865

Audience: 8th grade students in California

Goals

During this course, you will gain an understanding of the causes and effects of the American Civil War. You will survey the key events and compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of the northern and southern states during the war. After examining early political positions you will analyze the strategies invoked by both sides during the war, and contrast those ideals with the realities brought about by the prolonged struggle to end the war. You will examine the wide theater of combat, debate the outcome of key battles, and discuss the role of social injustice and reform on American society.

Objectives

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify and describe the differences in economics, politics, and social beliefs that divided the nation between 1861 and 1865.
  • Evaluate the strategies of military leaders from both the Federal and Confederate armies as they relate to key battles.
  • Describe the men who made up both armies.
  • Explain the importance of the Emancipation Proclamation and analyze its role in helping to end the war.
  • Sequence important events that occurred during the war.
  • Distinguish between the political roles of civilians and military roles of soldiers during the war.
  • Discuss the final phases of the war and explain what led to surrender.
