The following interactions were designed and integrated into the course, Concepts of Heroism, designed for 9th grade English Students in California.
Lesson module
Students will complete a lesson on the concept of heroic archetypes in literature. As they progress through the lesson, they will be asked to respond to multiple choice as well as essay questions.
Forum Discussion
At the start of lesson 1, students are asked to consider the concept of heroism, and to share their ideas on the discussion board. Students will respond to the following prompt:
Identify a person) that you consider heroic. Identify and explain three major heroic qualities that this person demonstrates. Be sure to give a definition/ explanation of each quality you name, as well as a description of how the person exhibits each quality in their actions. Consider any of the following as topics for your post:
• Someone you know
• A character from literature or film
• A historical figure
• An artist, past or present
• Any contemporary leader
Students will be required to post to the forum, and to respond to at least two other student posts, by the end of lesson one.
Collaborative Glossary
At the beginning of each lesson, teams of students will be assigned a small number of words, terms, or concepts that relate to the focus of the lesson. Students will collaborate to post clear explanations of each term, including pictures where applicable.
Blogs
Students will be required to add at least one new post to their student blogs at the end of this course. They may choose from an extensive menu of topics related to the central ideas of the course. Posts should be 1-3 paragraphs in length, and should include a picture as well as a hyperlink.
