Course Title: Camping Safety
Audience (hypothetical): newly-hired YMCA camp staff, nationwide
Goals:
This course in basic camping safety will provide an overview of what to should expect when one is "out-of-his-element." The learner will be informed about practical tips which may be required to ensure a safe camping experience, away from the comforts of home. Skills acquired in these modules are aimed at increasing one's knowledge of the outdoors and how it relates to a successful camping experience with little or no obstacles. The learner ought to be able to model the following objectives when interacting with young campers in an authentic outdoor setting.
Within the context of this course, the adult learner will be able to:
• Compare and contrast examples and non-examples of a safe fire procedures used while camping.
• List the environmental and fiscal effects of a forest fire.
• Compare and contrast examples and non-examples of procedures for determining safe (drinkable) water while camping in the wild.
• Describe the procedure for purifying water
• Evaluate climate changes, and its impact on maintaining a safe camping trip.
• Differentiate wilderness surroundings, including wild animals & plants, and their impact on maintaining a safe camping trip.
• Critique geographical surroundings and their impact on maintaining a safe camping trip.
• Identify essential items for a properly-equipped camping excursion.
