Description of content:

Session 1: Breaking down My Pyramid

* Introduce the USDA's new version of the food guide pyramid.
* Discuss the similarities and differences of the "old" food guide pyramid and My Pyramid.
* Identify the five food groups, recommended amount (# of servings) of each food group, and appropriate serving size of foods belonging to the five food groups.
* Students will be divided into six groups (five food groups and the "extras"). Each group will utilize class text, My Pyramid game, prior knowledge, and other print materials to become experts of their assigned group.
* Student groups will create three slides to use as they share/discuss what they have learned about their food group. They will respond to the following prompts:

1. Identify five foods belonging to food group.
2. Recommended amount (# of servings) of food to be consumed from the food group.
3. Appropriate serving size of foods in the food group.

Session 2: Healthy Choices

* Review session 1 content - check for understanding.
* How do we make better choices when it comes to our diet?
* Reading the nutritional label/menus for caloric and nutritional information.
-serving size
-calories
-fat
-carbohydrates
-protein
-% daily value
-ingredient list

* Making healthy choices (in class assignment)- students will be challenged to apply their knowledge of My Pyramid, analyze nutrition labels/menus, and make healthy choices while creating a meal (lunch) using menus from four popular fast food restaurants (imagine a food court at a local mall as the setting for this assignment). Students will post their menu selections to the class forum. When creating this meal, students must follow three requirements:

1. All five food groups are represented in their food choices.
2. The meal should not exceed 700 calories (1/3 of daily caloric needs).
3. Students only have $7.00 to spend.

* Prior to the next class period, students will be required to review the meals created by three classmates. These reviews will be posted as a response in the class forum area. Peer reviewers will evaluate menu choices according to the three assignment requirements.
