Course Description:
For my first objective (day 1-3, one for each section of the chapter):
1. Using Holt, World History: Medieval to Early Modern Times, chapter 2, “ The Fall of Rome” students will learn how to take notes, Cornell style.
• Instructors will distribute or have students download the Cornell note template. Students will hear a podcast of Holt chapter 2, section 1 (Holt 2.1) and follow along in their own text (also available electronically as students received the Holt c.d.—student edition). The instructor will chunk the text. After each chunk, the instructor will model how to take Cornell notes by using the portion of the notes and text just read. This procedure will be repeated as necessary until Holt 2.1 is complete. Students will then paste the notes into their student interactive notebooks (SINs).
For my second objective (day 1-3):
2. Using the Cornell notes from chapter 2, students will write three 5-7 sentence summaries that contain a topic sentence and at least 3 descriptive supports for these three topics:
• Strengths and lasting contributions of Rome (day 1, 2.1)
• Reasons for the fall of the Western Roman Empire (day 2, 2.2)
• The Byzantine Empire (day 3, 2.3)
The instructor will model for students how to write a 5-7 sentence summary of the Cornell notes. In edition, instruction today will consist of students typing the summary and saving it in a word document. Finally, students will be shown how to save the word document in a Moodle digital locker so that they can work on it from any computer. Finally, students will be shown how to copy the document and paste it into a forum that will be assessed by the instructor and other class mates.
For my third objective (day 4):
3. Given a blank map of the Roman Empire, students will use the Holt website to identify the geographic borders of the Roman Empire at its height by coloring the map to indicate Rome’s expansion.
Students will learn and to locate and download a resource on Moodle: a blank map of Europe, Africa, and Asia (Afroeurasia). Then, students will learn how to access the Holt website and copy and paste the code: SQ7 CH2 in order to access the section on Rome. Students will learn to navigate the Holt website and eventually locate the map on the Roman Empire at its height. Finally, students will color their blank maps accordingly, list the geographic borders of Rome at it’s height in accordance with HSS 7.1.2, and insert this map into their student interactive notebooks (SINs).
For my forth objective (day 5-8):
4. Using a web resource that the teacher will create, students will study various aspects of Roman contributions and theories for Rome’s fall to create a “Eulogy of Rome.” (job aid and rubric will be attached to Moodle)
The instructor will model for students how to download the rubric and Job aid for the “Eulogy of Rome.” Students will then click on the link for the web-based simulation that will enable students to complete a graphic organizer on Rome’s contributions and possible theories for Rome’s decline. The graphic organizer will be pasted into their SINs. Students will then use the graphic organizer to type up a Eulogy using the rubric and job aid provided. Students can store this Eulogy in Moodle’s digital lockers while they are working on it. Students will then email their Eulogy and print out a hard copy to be pasted onto construction paper and submitted to the instructor as a final piece.
For my fifth objective (day 9):
5. Students will learn to navigate the Holt website, in order to quiz themselves on the main ideas of the Roman Empire.
Instructor will demonstrate for students how to locate the chapter and section quizzes on the Holt website and have students email their scores to their instructor.
For my fourth objective (day 10):
6. Students will learn use the Moodle quiz feature to take a formal, standards-based assessment on HSS 7.1.
Students will be shown how to access the quiz and will be able to have 2 chances. The quiz will be opened on a Friday at 7:30 am and expected completion will be by Sunday at midnight. Students will be given class time to take the quiz, so the weekend will provide students with a chance to improve their scores.
