As most technologies have, the LMS’s of the future will evolve into something more useful and meaningful for its users. State standards and course frameworks will most likely still be driving our teaching curriculums. Teachers will evolve and find better ways to teach. By borrowing my favorite elements of the different LMS’s and adding and refining these elements, and ultimately melding them into my personalized LMS would be a good start to improve the LMS’s that are already in place. I wish to discuss ways to put my future LMS into action today.
At our school site, we teachers participate in professional development and meet by department every Friday in our, “Professional Learning Communities” (PLC). In our PLC we discuss housekeeping issues such as, PE equipment replenishment, facility use, and coordinate department events (Jump rope for heart, Turkey Trot, Fitnessgram testing...etc.). In the near future, I envision our physical education and health department using my future LMS. The LMS will allow us to be able to share tests, quizzes, end of course exams, assignments, as well as coordinate housekeeping issues. Students and parents alike will be able to access the LMS online to check their progress, homework, grades and the latest course events.
An effective LMS will only be as effective as its users. The training to use these LMS’s is the responsibility of the instructors. Those who choose to use the LMS must be sure to train their learners to a level of competency in which they are able to use the LMS indendently. In my opinion, it is crucial that the LMS instructor is very knowledgeable and just short of perfect before trainings with its learners begin.
My future LMS will function both school wide and departmentally. The LMS will cater to departments individually and be given the ability to share department information with the rest of the school, including the administration.
