Before reading the article, I had no idea how long distance learning had been in use. Correspondence courses are well over 100 years in use!
The U.S. government has a long history in distance education, including sponsoring radio programs geared toward educating farmers in the early 1900's. I found it especially interesting that the government made education for the common man a priority.
Many studies have shown little or no difference between results from distance and face-to-face educational methods. Of course, many have also shown differences, with no consistency of preference.
