Session 1- Introduction to the reading work involved in summary writing
a. Learners will find the article "Hooray for Weeds" in Resources and pre-read it before live webcast.
During live webcast:
b. Learners will review the purposes of reading non-fiction, specifically focusing on main idea and supporting details.
c. Learners will collaboratively identify the main ideas in each paragraph of "Hooray for Weeds"; instructor will model highlighter and comment features of Word.
d. Learners will practice using the highlighter and comment features on one paragraph of a non-fiction article.

After the webcast activities, learners will independently read an assigned article, highlight important details and type main ideas of each paragraph using comments.

Session 2- Introduction to the graphic organizer and summary format
During live webcast:
a. Learners will review the purpose of a summary and be introduced to the graphic organizer
b. Learners will review different text structures (cause & effect, Problem/solution, etc.) and how they can be used to organize a summary.
b. Learners will review notes from "Hooray for Weeds" and discuss possible ways the ideas from the article can be combined/organized
c. From discussion, instructor will model transferring notes into graphic organizer

After the webcast activities, learners will independently fill out graphic organizers for their assigned articles and then upload. Each learner will need to view two other graphic organizers for the same article and reflect on whether they missed important details or had different main ideas. Learners will leave comments for graphic organizers reviewed.
