Course Content for Jimenez' Moodle Project

Session 1
1. Learners will read from their Traditions and Encounters textbook (pp. 339-344) on the “Scramble for Africa.” This excerpt gives them background on what imperialism is, why Europeans targeted African for Imperialism, and what the main motivations for European imperialism in Africa were.

2. Learners watch a short video clip from Discovery Education’s “Assignment Discovery: When Civilizations End.” The clip gives a brief synopsis of European imperialism in Africa.

3. Learners will download a job aid on the five major motivations for European Imperialism.

4. Learners will download the “Analyzing Imperial Motives” graphic organizer from “History Alive”. In collaborative groups they will then view a slide show depicting 15 artifacts (visual and written). Using the graphic organizer the learners will identify what they see or read in each artifact and identify which one(s) of the motives for imperialism are depicted in each artifact. (objective 1)

Session 2
1. Learners will read from their Traditions and Encounters textbook (pp. 345-351) on “Imperialism.” This excerpt outlines the models Europeans used for control of their colonial possessions. It also provides a chart on the four major forms of imperial control (p. 346).

2. Students will download the “Methods of Imperial Control” handout. The handout will describe a scenario pairing an imperial power with a specific colony or region of the world. Students will work with a partner and identify what type(s) of imperialism is(are) depicted in each scenario. (objective 2)
