Deliverable #1: Forum Reflection Post – Solving Quadratics

During the second lesson in the series, students will take part in the powerpoint lesson activity. After some initial instruction, students will complete a guided practice example. The final slide will present students with a similar problem to solve, but will not be provide with the answer. Upon solving the problem, they each post individually in a forum. The students will be asked to not only post their solution, but a short 1-2 paragraph reflection, answering the following questions:
• What did I learn and how will this learning help me?...
• What was the most difficult part of the problem-solving process?
• What do I still need to learn / master before I become proficient solving quadratics?

Once they’ve posted they must reply (comment) on at least three other posts, offering insights, comments, and anything else that may be helpful.

Prior to this assignment, students will have completed the first module and been assessed via a quiz. This forum post will be the second component toward the total score earned. It will be assigned as Homework, in which the students complete in their own time.

Deliverable #2: Wiki Group Project

• Student Groups solve an applied Quadratics situation involving vertical motion. Working in small groups, they are given a vertical motion problem, solving for the time an object is in the air.
• Groups will solve the problem using the Quadratic Formula and describe what the solutions mean for the given situation.
• Groups will graph the quadratic equation representing their vertical motion situation and label all important parts of the graph.
• Working in groups, students will create a wiki demonstrating the solution and graph of their vertical motion problem.
• In their wiki, groups will describe the meaning of their graphical and numeric solutions in words.

Groups are assigned a vertical motion problem to solve and graph.
This would be the third and final component of the total score earned for all three lessons. Each of the students in a group will earn the same score as the other members in the group. This score will be added to their quiz and forum post scores to attain the final score for all three lessons, which would hence be recorded in the gradebook. Due to the complexity and group nature of this assignment, it would take place during class, making it an in-class assignment.
