Bonilla: Geography of the United States & Canada

Session 1: This session will focus on introducing the population patterns of the people in the U.S. and Canada and how the physical geography has affected population patterns.

A. To introduce the lesson, students will watch a couple of short videos on the immigrant history of the United States and Canada.
Questions to ponder: What were some of the reasons immigrants came to the U.S. and Canada? Where did they want to live? Why?
B. Using the text, compare the population density and distribution between U.S. and Canada. Cities vs. Coastal Cities vs. Inland Cities.
Questions to ponder: Why did agriculture lead to urbanization?Where do most people live today? Why do most people live in coastal areas? What are some of the important coastal cities in the U.S and Canada? What helped population grow in the inland cities?
C. Using a Google Sheet that I already shared with you, input your answers to at least three of the Q2P listed above.
D. Go to the class blog and answer the following question: How are the population patterns of Canada and the United States similar? How do they differ? See what your classmates said. Do you agree or disagree? Feel free to comment.
E. Homework due next class: Using GDocs, create a five (5) slide presentation to illustrate the following. Imagine that you are an immigrant and you want to share with your relatives back home images from your new home in the U.S. or Canada. Get your digital camera or cell phone and walk around your new neighborhood and shoot some pictures of your favorite spots. Upload them to your computer, insert them into your presentation, and include a brief comment describing the location and why it's relevant to you. If you do not have a digital camera, feel free to search for some stock images on the internet and use those to complete the assignment. Please remember to share with me by 12pm the day of class.

Session 2: This session will focus on how religion, languages, and the arts reflect the cultural diversity of the U.S. and Canada.
A. Before beginning with next session, let's take a few minutes to discuss some of the answers you submitted for the two in-class assignments. I will also show you some of the presentations your classmates created in the homework assignment.
B. Download the word document called "Cultures and Lifestyles" that is listed under session 2 in the moodle. As we discuss the chapter, feel free to fill out the diagram under the appropriate heading.
C. Go to the class blog and post your answer to the following question: What challenges are created for government, education, and business when a country has two official languages?
D. Quiz
