In lesson 2, students are learning how to solve the Quadratic Formula. The lesson itself will offer several practice problems and solutions so students may check their work. The final practice problem will provide no solution. After solving it, students will post their answer to a forum and respond to several questions detailing their experience solving the problem and what additional assistance they may need. Finally, students will reply to at least two other posts to compare solutions and offer insight (and assistance) to the other student's reflection.
In lesson 3, students work collaboratively in groups to solve a vertical motion problem and present their graphic and numeric solution in the form of a wiki. The wiki will include 5 sections:
- The word problem: In writing, analyze the vertical motion problem assigned to them.
- The parabola: Given the vertical motion equation, predict the characteristics of it's associated graph.
- The math: Graph and label the parabola corresponding to the assigned vertical motion problem. Then, solve for the roots using the quadratic formula.
- The solution and meaning: In writing, discuss the meaning of the solution.
- Reflection: Reflect individually on the process, and solution.
While working in groups, students will assume roles to facilitate their group work.
- Facilitator: In charge of making sure all tasks are completed and all group members are working on their assigned tasks. When a teacher comes by to ask your group how you are doing, the manager is the person the teacher will ask.
- Recorder: Writes down and organizes all work completed by the group.
- Number Cruncher: Checks all calculations for accuracy.
