The first thing that I found very interesting about this article was the foundation of distance learning as far back as the early 1900s, and as far back as the 17th century. I really never thought about distance education before the 21st century, so it was really interesting to read about the innovations in radio and television and connect these to distance education today.
The information presented about satellites relating to educational television was also very interesting. The amount of information that can be transmitted via satellite is astounding, and it really has made an unforgettable inpact on distance education by providing resources to students world-wide.
As a homeschool educational facilitator, I also found the information presented on homeschoolers to be very interesting. I work for a homeschool, the Julian Charter School, and found the statistics, particularly that of more than 4 million children being homeschooled in the U.S. as of 2002, really fantastic. This is great for my business, but also for distance learning as it provides students with an alternative learning environment that relies heavily on the Internet and information technology.
